  • National Fraternity History

Lambda Chi Alpha was founded by Warren A. Cole, while a student at Boston University, on November 2, 1909; with the expressed objective purpose of bringing about the association together of college students of good moral character in the various collegiate institutions within the United States and Canada; to foster a high Christian standard of life and ideals, to promote honorable friendship, to cultivate intellectual excellence, to secure for members the greatest advantages in college life, to establish brotherly love, mutual aid, close personal connection between alumni, undergraduates and college, and to bind them together for mutual pleasure and interest in college as well as after life by testing each with courage, self-control, obedience, democracy and courtesy toward all with whom the may come in contact.

Today, Lambda Chi Alpha International Fraternity is one of the largest men's general fraternities in North America with more than 227,000 initiated members and has held subsidiaries (called chapters) at more than 300 universities. It was the first fraternity to eliminate pledging and remains a leader in the fight against hazing, alcohol abuse, and other challenges facing today's college student. Lambda Chi Alpha serves to complement higher education by providing opportunities for academic achievement, leadership development, and lifelong friendships. • About our Chapter

Brief History of Alpha Pi Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha

Alpha Pi Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha was chartered at the University of Denver in 1917.  We are the 15th chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha and are one of the oldest continuously operating chapters of Lambda Chi Alpha.

The first group of Lambda Chi's at DU were known as a local fraternity, Pi Theta Kappa.  The beautiful Lambda Chi Alpha Chapter House was not under construction until 1927 and the early years all meetings were held at the apartment of a faculty member, E.B. Renaud (Alpha Pi initiate #1) above the University Park Pharmacy, which today houses a popular café.

From our very beginning at the University of Denver, Lambda Chi Alpha has prided itself on our efforts to be the best chapter at the University.  During our entire history, Alpha Pi Zeta has remained open and held ourselves accountable for our actions and based our operations on the 7 Core Values of our Fraternity (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Service and Stewardship, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage).  No chapter at DU has had our success in consistently recruiting the best men on campus, nor has any approached our high level of campus leadership, community service and academic success.  Although some other chapters on campus started many years before we joined the Univeristy of Denver, we have far surpassed all of them in the number of men initiated (2010 as of last Spring) and in the high level of alumni support and involvement.

Throughout our nearly 100 year history, Alpha Pi Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha has contributed greatly to the University of Denver and to the Lambda Chi Alpha International Fraternity. Many men have served DU and the Fraternity with distinction over the years. In the future, we plan on posting a Chronology over the years of chapter and individual member highlights. Please feel free to e-mail us suggestions along these lines.  We also will be scanning in pictures from decades past, so keep checking back and you just might see yourself or someone you know featured here.

  • We would like to acknowledge a special group of alumni of our chapter for their service to Lambda Chi Alpha by serving on the Grand High Zeta (Fraternity Board of Directors):
